In IELTS Writing Task 1, you’re not expected to write every single number or detail from the visual. Instead, you’re assessed on your ability to summarize and highlight the most important features, patterns, and comparisons.
📌 What Are Key Features?
Key features are the main trends, significant changes, highest or lowest values, and notable comparisons in the data.
Think about:
- 📈 Sharp increases or decreases
- 💹 Peaks and troughs
- 🔁 Fluctuations or stability
- 🌍 Major differences between categories
- 📆 Time-based trends (rise/fall over years)
📊 Example 1: Line Graph – Internet Usage (2000–2020)
Don’t say:
In 2000, usage was 10%. In 2001, it increased to 15%. In 2002, it reached 20%, then 30% in 2003…
❌ This is called data listing — it’s ineffective and boring.
Do say:
Internet usage rose steadily from 10% in 2000 to 85% by 2020, showing a consistent upward trend over the two decades.
✅ This captures the key trend — no need to mention every year.
📊 Example 2: Bar Chart – Car Sales in 5 Countries
Don’t say:
The UK sold 1 million cars, France sold 900,000, Germany sold 1.2 million…
❌ Again, this is listing.
Do say:
Germany had the highest car sales among the five countries, while France and the UK followed closely behind.
✅ Focuses on comparison and ranking, not raw numbers.
🧠 How to Identify Key Features Quickly
- Scan the Visual First (30 seconds max).
- Look for:
- Largest/smallest segments.
- Rapid growth or decline.
- Similarities or contrasts.
- Outliers or unexpected values.
- Highlight 2–3 Main Features only. These will go in your Overview and Body Paragraphs.
