Task 1 (Academic) Focus on Key Comparisons 🔍

💬 “In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, comparisons are your storytelling tool—use them wisely to highlight what truly matters.”

📌 Why Are Comparisons So Important?

IELTS Task 1 is about describing data, and one of the most effective ways to show understanding is through comparison.

Comparisons help:

  • ⚖️ Highlight contrasts and patterns
  • 🧠 Show analytical skills (essential for 8+ bands!)
  • 🧭 Guide the examiner’s focus to the most significant information

🧠 What to Compare?

Look for:

🔢 Data Type🔎 What to Compare
📈 Line GraphTrends over time between two or more variables
📊 Bar ChartCategories with highest/lowest values
🗺️ MapsChanges in infrastructure, locations, or layouts
🔁 ProcessSteps that differ in purpose, time, or complexity
📦 Pie ChartProportions and percentages among segments

🧾 Example Prompt

“The chart below shows the percentage of households in different income groups that had Internet access between 2010 and 2020.”

🧪 Weak vs. Strong Comparison

Weak:
“In 2010, 60% of low-income households had internet. In 2020, it was 75%.”

Strong:
“While only 60% of low-income households had internet in 2010, this rose significantly to 75% by 2020—closing the gap with high-income households, which consistently remained above 90%.”

➡️ Why it’s better? It contrasts time and categories, and it highlights a trend with meaning.

📌 Tip Breakdown

✅ DO:

  • Choose 2–3 major comparisons for your body paragraphs
  • Use linkers: “in contrast,” “whereas,” “while,” “compared to”
  • Emphasize the largest increases/decreases, highest/lowest values, or most noticeable differences

🚫 DON’T:

  • Compare every single detail (it’s not a list-writing task!)
  • Force comparisons that don’t show meaningful contrast
  • Ignore the overview—it’s where you hint at the key differences

📚 Sample Phrases for Comparison

  • In contrast to…
  • Whereas A increased, B declined.
  • Compared to A, B was significantly lower/higher.
  • A remained steady, while B showed considerable fluctuation.
  • Unlike A, which grew steadily, B dropped sharply.

🧠 Quick Practice

Prompt: “The bar chart shows car production in Japan and South Korea from 2010 to 2020.”

📌 Your task: Write one strong comparative sentence.

Example:

“Although both countries saw growth, Japan’s car production rose more dramatically, nearly doubling by 2020, while South Korea’s increase was more gradual.

🚀 Final Reminder

🎓 “High scorers don’t just describe—they analyze. Comparisons are how you impress the examiner with insight, not just observation.”
