Why is it important?
In IELTS Writing Task 1 (General Training), you will typically be given a question prompt that asks you to address multiple points. If you fail to cover all these points, your response may be deemed incomplete, and you will lose valuable marks in Task Achievement. This is a crucial element for achieving a Band 8+.
Covering all the points clearly ensures that:
- Your response is relevant and complete.
- You avoid confusion or vagueness.
- You maintain a coherent structure that directly answers the task requirements.
How to approach addressing all points:
- Identify the Key Points in the Question
The first step is to carefully identify all the points you need to address in your letter. In IELTS Writing Task 1, the prompt will often have multiple parts. It might ask you to:
- Explain a problem
- Request an action
- Suggest a solution
- Explain the issues you are facing.
- Request a solution to the problem.
- Suggest a possible solution.โ
- Point 1: Explain the issues with your apartment.
- Point 2: Request that the landlord take action.
- Point 3: Suggest a possible solution.
- Explain a problem
- Make Sure Each Point is Addressed Clearly
Once youโve identified the points, itโs time to structure your response so that each part is addressed clearly. Donโt just mention the points vaguely. For example:
- Point 1: Explain the issues:
โThe heating system in the apartment is not functioning properly, and I am unable to maintain a comfortable temperature.โ - Point 2: Request a solution:
โI kindly request that you send someone to fix the heating system as soon as possible.โ - Point 3: Suggest a solution:
โAlternatively, if repairs will take longer, I would appreciate if a space heater could be provided.โ
- Point 1: Explain the issues:
- Avoid Missing or Overlooking Any Points
Often, candidates make the mistake of ignoring one of the points or addressing it too briefly. This can lead to a lack of completeness, which directly affects your band score. Ensure that each point gets equal attention and depth. Misunderstood Example:
Prompt: โWrite to your friend about your recent vacation. Tell him/her:- Where you went.
- What you did there.
- Why you liked it.โ
โI went to the beach. It was great.โ Complete Response:
โI went to Bali last month. I spent the days lounging on the beach, enjoying the local culture, and trying out surfing. It was amazing because the views were breathtaking, and I felt relaxed and rejuvenated.โ The second response covers all three points: where, what, and why, and does so in detail.
- Balance the Length of Your Responses
Each point should be explained in detail, but not excessively long. Keep your responses balanced: avoid writing too little or too much for each point. Aim for around 2-3 sentences per point (depending on the task and points given).
- Organize Your Letter Using Paragraphs
Itโs essential to organize your letter into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific point. This ensures your writing is coherent and well-structured. Example of a clear structure:
- Introduction: Briefly introduce the purpose of your letter.
- Body Paragraph 1: Explain the first point in detail.
- Body Paragraph 2: Address the second point in detail.
- Body Paragraph 3: Offer a suggestion or solution for the third point.
- Conclusion: Politely close the letter, possibly requesting action or expressing gratitude.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping Points: Donโt leave out any of the points requested by the prompt. Even if you think a point is minor, include it in your response.
- Over-generalizing: Avoid vague language like โI had a great time.โ Be specific about why something was enjoyable or important.
- Under-Explaining: While brevity is important, under-explaining can lead to confusion. Ensure clarity and sufficient detail for each point.
Summary
- Identify all the key points in the question prompt.
- Address each point in a clear, structured way.
- Avoid skipping or glossing over any point.
- Organize your letter into proper paragraphs, each addressing a distinct part of the prompt.
- Keep your response balanced in length, ensuring clarity and detail.
By addressing all points clearly, you will provide a complete and relevant response to the task, demonstrating your ability to meet the Task Achievement requirements for a high band score (8+).
